Before a planned visit, obtain two sets of answers: the hospital’s charges and payment arrangements, and your insurer’s coverage conditions. A facility accepting a payment card or listing an insurer does not settle every question about your individual bill.
Use this checklist for administrative preparation in mainland China. It contains no nationwide price estimate or assessment of whether a particular policy will reimburse you.
Ask what the quotation includes
| Possible item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Registration or consultation | Quoted amount, service and clinician or appointment category. |
| Investigations or other services | Whether the quotation includes these, or whether they are separately charged if requested by the clinical team. |
| Medication or supplies | Which items, if any, are included in the estimate. |
| Administrative services | Any charge for interpretation, record copies, translation or delivery. |
| Deposit or cancellation | When payment is due and the applicable refund or cancellation conditions. |
Ask whether the quotation is an estimate and how changes will be explained. Keep the response with the campus, department, date and currency. You can then compare like-for-like charges without treating a consultation fee as the total cost of an entire visit.
Confirm the payment method with the facility
Beijing’s official guide lists RMB cash, international payment cards, UnionPay debit cards, WeChat Pay and Alipay. Confirm which option your chosen facility accepts for the exact bill, including any advance payment. A published list does not confirm every card, campus or booking channel. Beijing government: medical guide for foreigners.
- Which payment methods can I use at this campus and department?
- Are any amounts due at booking, check-in or another stage?
- If my preferred method fails, which alternative can I use?
- What receipts and itemized documents will be issued, and how do I obtain them?
Prepare Alipay, WeChat Pay or a card before the visit
Our practical recommendation is to prepare a mobile-payment option, carry a physical card and keep some RMB cash available. Confirm the hospital’s preferred route first. A linked overseas card and a physical card presented at a terminal are different payment routes.
| Option | Prepare it | Ask the billing desk |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay | Download, register and link an eligible card | Can this bill be paid with an overseas card linked to Alipay? |
| WeChat Pay / Weixin Pay | Set up WeChat and its payment wallet | Does this payment channel support my linked international card? |
| UnionPay | Understand the physical card and app options | Can I use this physical card, or do you require a particular app? |
For a larger deposit, check the amount against your app and bank limits, any service or currency-conversion charges, and the refund route. Do not treat successful card linking as confirmation that a hospital bill will be accepted. The payment methods overview explains how to prepare alternatives.
Useful question: 可以用绑定境外银行卡的支付宝或微信付款吗? — Can I pay with Alipay or WeChat linked to an overseas bank card? If a payment is pending, check the bill with the cashier before trying again.
Confirm coverage with your insurer
- Is this exact facility, campus and service within my plan’s covered network?
- Does the proposed visit require advance authorization, a referral or contact with an assistance service?
- What deductible, co-payment, exclusion or limit applies to my situation?
- Does the policy cover this purpose of travel and the care I am seeking?
- If I pay first, which documents and submission deadline apply to a claim?
Use your insurer’s official contact and obtain a written reference where available. Share the visit details it needs through its approved channel. The hospital can explain its billing process; your insurer should explain the terms of your own policy.
What direct billing still leaves to check
United Family Healthcare publishes facility-specific direct-billing information and says that a patient’s co-payment or deductible depends on their plan. Its published process refers to primary insurance for direct billing. These are provider-specific conditions. United Family Healthcare: insurance and direct billing.
Ask both parties whether the arrangement applies to your exact visit and whether authorization is complete. Also ask what you would need to pay yourself and how any uncovered amount will be handled. An insurer logo is a starting point for a question, rather than confirmation of full payment.
Residents and visitors have different starting points
If you live in China: confirm any local social-insurance enrollment with the responsible office or your employer, and check the current local rules. Shanghai’s official explanation distinguishes eligible foreign employees and specified eligible resident groups; holding a foreign passport alone does not establish eligibility. Shanghai government: medical insurance for foreign residents.
If you are visiting: check the cover that applies to your trip, its dates and purpose, along with the assistance contact and claim process. Do this before relying on any advertised hospital arrangement.
After payment
Check your identifying details on the documents. Keep the itemized bill, payment evidence and any records the insurer specifically requests. Ask about missing documents before leaving the city. The records guide gives you a request checklist.
