Weixin Pay, often called WeChat Pay, is the payment service inside WeChat. Download WeChat first, then set up its wallet. This guide covers eligible international-card payments at merchants in mainland China.
1. Install WeChat
- iPhone: open the official WeChat App Store listing and tap Get.
- Android: use the WeChat Google Play listing and tap Install. If that store is unavailable on your device, start from WeChat’s official download website.
- Check the app identity before installing. You do not need an unrelated app advertised as a separate “WeChat Pay download”.
2. Register or sign in
- Use your existing WeChat account if you have one. Otherwise choose sign-up with your own mobile number and the correct country code.
- Complete the verification and security steps shown. Keep access to the number for future checks; account creation and payment activation are separate steps.
- Review the terms and privacy notices presented by the service. If registration stalls, use official help rather than buying an account or giving someone your verification code.
Tencent’s visitor guide describes using an international phone number and linking eligible international credit or debit cards. Its supported networks include Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Discover/Diners Club and UnionPay; acceptance of your card still depends on the service and issuer. 3. Open the wallet and add a card
- In WeChat, open Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards, then choose the add-card option.
- Enter your own card details as requested, including expiry and security information where required.
- Follow any identity-verification prompts. If you use a passport, the app may request its details and an image. Use the official in-app process.
- Complete bank verification and set a payment password if prompted. Keep the payment password private.
- Before relying on the card, check that it is available for the merchant payment you are making.
The menu route above is documented in Shanghai’s September 2026 guide. If Services or Wallet is missing, check the official in-app help for your account and region; older instructions may use different labels. Shanghai government: mobile payment instructions, September 2026.
4. Pay at a merchant
You can scan the merchant’s collection code or display your own payment code for the cashier to scan. Check the recipient, amount and selected card before confirming. Ask the cashier to check the result if the payment status is unclear.
International-card purchase access does not establish access to transfers or Red Packets. Those functions are outside the foreign-credit-card payment route described in Shanghai’s guide. Ask for a hospital’s official merchant payment channel. Shanghai government: linking overseas cards and payment functions.
Understand the fee before confirming
Tenpay’s notice dated 15 January 2026 says international-card purchases of RMB 200 or less have no international-card service fee. Above RMB 200, the standard fee is 3% of the entire purchase, with applicable reductions shown in the service. It also describes proportional return of that service fee when a transaction is refunded. Your bank’s separate charges may follow different rules. Tenpay: international-card fee rules, 15 January 2026.
Tencent announced a first-time international-card promotion on 27 May 2026: a 90-day 3% fee waiver on daily spending up to RMB 1,000. Eligibility, activation and the current offer must be checked in your account. Do not budget on the assumption that all hospital payments will be fee-free. Before using it at a hospital
- Ask whether the specific bill can be paid with an overseas card linked to Weixin Pay. Acceptance of WeChat for messaging or appointments is a different question.
- For an advance payment or deposit, check the amount against the app and bank limits. Arrange a fallback with the billing desk.
- After payment, request the itemised bill and insurance documents. Keep the transaction reference for any refund query.
If something goes wrong
| Issue | Next step |
|---|---|
| Registration or SMS check fails | Verify your number and country code, then follow official WeChat account support. |
| Bank rejects the link or payment | Ask your card issuer about the attempted transaction and its verification requirements. |
| Wallet works elsewhere but not for this bill | Ask the hospital about its international-card merchant-payment support and another official payment method. |
| Pending payment or refund | Check the app and hospital records before repeating payment; ask which transaction reference and refund route apply. |
