Seeing a Doctor in China: A Practical Guide for Foreigners

Start with the specific hospital or clinic: confirm its appointment route, the documents it needs and how you will communicate. Use this guide to prepare for an outpatient visit in mainland China. Each facility sets its own arrangements, so treat the steps below as a planning checklist.

For official emergency numbers, open Emergency contacts.

Before you book

  • Write down the institution, campus and department you intend to contact. A hospital may have more than one address or booking desk.
  • Use an official website or city government directory to find the appointment channel. Confirm that it accepts your identity document and that you can complete any account or phone verification.
  • Ask separately about language support for booking, the consultation and written documents. Explain the language you need when you contact the facility.
  • Ask the hospital for help identifying the correct administrative booking route if the department name is unclear.

Shanghai’s published hospital guide describes passport registration and a hospital card for a first visit. That is a Shanghai example, rather than proof that every online channel accepts every foreign identity document. See Shanghai International Services: how to see a doctor.

Pack a small appointment folder

  • The identity document specified by the hospital, using the same name and number as the booking.
  • Your appointment confirmation, campus address in Chinese and English, and arrival instructions.
  • Any existing reports or documents the receiving team has asked you to bring. Ask about an accepted language or format before paying for translation.
  • Your insurance details, relevant authorization and a payment method the facility has confirmed.
  • A short written list of questions for the consultation and a way to take notes.

Keep an offline copy of the appointment details. Check the building, floor, arrival time and late-arrival or cancellation instructions. A screenshot of an unfinished booking form is not a confirmation; save the final reference or written response.

At the facility

Show your confirmation and identity document at the designated desk. Ask which steps are already complete and where to go next. If you receive a patient number or card, retain it with your visit details so you can identify the same record later.

StageUseful question
Check-inDoes this booking need any additional registration before I go to the waiting area?
PaymentWhich charges are due now, and which may be billed separately?
DocumentsHow will I receive the reports and receipts from this visit?
Next appointmentIf the clinical team requests another visit, how do I arrange it?

Ask the clinical team to explain medical instructions you do not understand. This website can help organize the paperwork; questions about your condition, investigations or treatment belong with your healthcare professional.

Before you leave

  • Confirm which documents are ready and which will follow later.
  • Ask for the document names, expected availability and the official collection or delivery route.
  • Check that your name and identifying details on receipts and reports are accurate.
  • Save a contact for administrative follow-up and any appointment the team has arranged.
  • If you will leave China soon, confirm how you can receive outstanding documents from abroad.
