Prepare one working mobile-payment option, carry a physical payment card and keep some RMB cash available. This is our practical starting recommendation for foreign residents and visitors. For a hospital visit, confirm the payment route with its billing desk before relying on any of them.
Use this page to choose what to set up. The healthcare costs and insurance guide covers quotations, deposits, direct billing and claim documents.
Choose your payment options
| Option | When to consider it | Prepare first |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay | Merchant QR payments with an eligible linked card. | Install Alipay, register and add your own supported card. Alipay setup guide. |
| WeChat Pay / Weixin Pay | Merchant payments within WeChat; useful alongside its messaging and mini programs. | Install WeChat, then activate payment and add a supported card. WeChat Pay setup guide. |
| Physical UnionPay card | Card-terminal or ATM use where the network is accepted. | Ask your issuer about China use, PIN, charges and limits. UnionPay card and app guide. |
| Other physical bank cards | A backup where the terminal accepts your particular card network. | Confirm the network and card with the hospital; an app logo does not confirm terminal acceptance. |
| RMB cash | A backup when a phone, network or card fails. | Ask where to pay in cash, particularly when an online booking route needs advance payment. |
Shanghai’s official payment guide covers bank cards, cash and mobile wallets. Beijing’s healthcare guide lists RMB cash, several card networks, UnionPay and WeChat Pay/Alipay. These are published options, not confirmation that every hospital desk or booking system accepts every card. A useful setup order
- Start with the app used by your chosen provider, or one that accepts your existing card. Alipay and WeChat Pay both offer international-card routes; a mainland bank account is not a universal prerequisite for that route.
- Follow the relevant setup guide while you still have time to resolve SMS or card verification. Keep access to the phone number used by your bank.
- If practical, set up a second option. Two apps linked to the same card still share a possible point of failure: the card issuer.
- After arrival, try a small, genuine merchant purchase before relying on the method for an appointment. A successful shop payment does not verify a hospital’s payment channel.
Some existing overseas wallets can pay at participating mainland merchants through Alipay+ or UnionPay partners. Check your wallet’s own China instructions first; Alipay+ is a payment network, not a reason to download an unfamiliar app with a similar name. Ant Group: international cards and Alipay+ wallets.
Check fees and limits before a large payment
International-card payments can involve an app service fee and separate charges from your card issuer. Read the payment confirmation, check the selected card, and ask your bank about currency conversion and overseas-use fees. The Alipay and WeChat Pay guides explain the published fee rules and their conditions.
Published international-card limits for Alipay and Weixin Pay are ceilings, not guaranteed spending allowances. Your account, issuer or transaction may have a lower limit. For a hospital deposit, confirm the actual amount and payment route in advance instead of assuming an app can handle it. Shanghai government: mobile payment instructions, September 2026.
At the hospital payment desk
- Say whether you mean a physical overseas card or an overseas card linked inside an app. Ask about the exact campus, department and payment channel.
- Confirm the patient name, bill reference, recipient and RMB amount before authorising payment. Ask staff to explain an unfamiliar recipient name.
- If the app says pending, check the bill with the cashier before trying again. A bank notification alone may not settle the hospital’s record.
- Ask for the itemised bill and the documents your insurer requires. A payment screenshot does not automatically replace those documents.

Keep a fallback ready
Save the bank and app support routes, keep your phone charged, and carry the physical card you intend to use. If an online hospital payment fails, ask for its official alternative. Pay through the hospital’s confirmed channel and keep the receipt.
